i really should start paying more attention to other modem sites then maybe i would not feel so clueless when people talk about them going down

Its the same concept with the old FTA boxes, it was fine until the owners of the forums started selling boxes then BAM. Lights out. It's ok to teach someone how to do something, but once you provide them with the tools and equipment to do so, then you're skating on thin ice.
