I'd like to know the answer to this. I guess it all depends on what JTAG software you need to use.

But lets wait until someone who actually knows gives an opinion.

FWIW, I have some Xilinx DLC6 unit that have serial and USB and JTAG. Hard to know what those might be useable with.

no, if you want something cheap make it ft2232 based (ever wondered why my avatar is what it is)

nope, well the complete answer is yes but theres no software (not unless you want to make parts lists for openocd or urjtag, not easy at all)
ft2232 based jtags are compatible with toms jtag utility

I have an D630 laptop that has a serial port, maybe I will go for this instead. Cheaper and comes with cables for both SB5101 and adapter for DPC2100 (other free goodies as well)

sure but soon you'll hit something SPI based and need an spi flasher, and the ftdi will do it as well
also half hour flashes who wants that, 30 seconds is where its at (that in itself is worth the extra 10 bucks)
and i'm not mentioning it also works as a max232/ttl cable

I have a laptop with a serial port, will this setup work if I use it with an adapter?

RE: will this jtag work ? - drewmerc - 14-07-2014

no

damn it guys i'll write it as simple as i can
if you want hand holding and a gui buy a usbjtag (the hand holding is worth the money in itself, support is second to none)
if your cheap buy an ftdi based jtag (yes you have to use the command line for spi but it's like 1 line for reading and one line for writing and it's not like these lines ever change, you could write a simple bat file in under 5 minutes to give you that old school gui script feel)
if your retarded go for the old parallel jtag (shit slow 45 minutes to flash, also $10 for the jtag $10 for a chinese spi flasher and $5 for a ttl cable now i bet you wish you had just bought the ftdi that can do it all for $20)
