Diagnostic modem??
#1
this just means that the modem has new firmware right???
or is the modem in Diagnostic mode on a 5100??

this is what this guy said about the sb5100

"you said in your earlier message the operating lights ont the modem come on when u power it up. now u say the modem did not ship with a power supply. as the auction description the only cable this auction comes with is the power supply which i included with the modem. it is a diagnostic modem you put it in standby and reset thru the diagonostic command menu. if you dont know how to configure the modem then it is a user error not a faulty modem."

how true is this??

how true is this??
The seller is referring to "telnet access". Did you have telnet access when you initially received it? If so, this is a case in which the modem arrived functional PER his/her E-Bay description and something that you did to it caused the modem to be non-functional or it just "died" in your possession. This does happen when you buy used electronics, whether it be a laptop or cell phone.

third time i've seen that today people saying "how to telnet", seriously what are you people doing? why are you not trying to understand the inner workings of a modem, all the unspoken answers lie there

using putty http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/late.../putty.exe

Open Putty. Click the 'session' section of the settings panel:

Connection type: Telnet
Host Name: 192.168.100.1
Port: 23
Close window on exit: Never

Click 'open', enter username and password and press enter.
(at this point if your modems online you get a cm> prompt if not enter the following command)
cd \cm_hal
scan_stop
cd \
(scanning should now stop)

help

and there you have it, i guess first you should learn how to use the help command
Code:
COMMAND: help

USAGE: help [-t|-l|-s|-i|-a|-lr] [command [...]{126}]

DESCRIPTION:
Shows usage information about the specified command(s), or lists the set of
commands available in the active table. If no parameters are specified, the
an abbreviated list of all commands and subtables is displayed.

-t -- Shows the entire tree of command tables and commands (in
abbreviated form).
-l -- Shows detailed information about all commands and subtables (thi
can print a LOT of information)!
-s -- Shows detailed information on just the subtables.
-i -- Shows detailed information on just the registered instances for
the active table.
-a -- Does everything that the -l, -s, and -i options do.

Command is the name (or partial name) of one or more commands and subtables
for which you want detailed help to be displayed.

EXAMPLES:
help -- This shows an abbreviated list of all commands and
subtables.
help cd -- This shows detailed help on the 'cd' command.
help cd ! diag -- This shows detailed help on the 2 commands and subtable
listed.
help -l -- Shows detailed help on all available commands and
subtables.

y u no do what i say
but for the record just because a modem is doing that proves nothing as that's the default action on all cable modems
only way to know if it works or not is to flash it with a known working firmware
